Prop firm payout rules explained: buffers, caps, consistency and splits
Passing is half the job. This guide explains the payout rules futures prop firms use, from profit buffers and payout caps to consistency rules and profit splits, so you know when you can actually withdraw.
Getting funded feels like the finish line, but your money is only real when it reaches your bank. Every futures prop firm has payout rules, and they differ more than prices do.
1. Profit buffer (or safety net)
Many firms ask you to build a cushion above your starting balance before the first withdrawal. If the buffer is $2,000, you must make more than $2,000 in profit before you can take anything out, and often you can only withdraw what is above it.
Why it matters: a firm with daily payouts but a large buffer can be slower than a firm with weekly payouts and no buffer.
2. Payout frequency
How often you can request money: daily, every few trading days, every five winning days, or every 14 days. “Winning days” usually means days with profit above a minimum amount, so read the definition.
3. Minimum and maximum payout
- Minimum payout: the smallest amount you can request, for example $250 or $1,000.
- Payout cap: the most you can withdraw per request or per period, often lower for the first few payouts. Some firms also limit a payout to a percentage of your profit or balance.
4. Consistency rule
A consistency rule stops one big day from making up most of your profit. A 40% rule means your best day can be at most 40% of total profit. If you have one $3,000 day, you need at least $7,500 total profit before you qualify. Some firms apply it only in the evaluation, some only on the funded account, some in both.
5. Profit split
The share of profit you keep. Many firms pay 90% or more, and some pay 100% of the first $10,000 or so before moving to a standard split.
6. Account limits and scaling
Firms often limit how many funded accounts you can hold at once, and some limit contract size until you build profit. If you plan to copy trades across accounts, check the maximum number of accounts.
How to compare quickly
On PropsRank, open any firm page to see payouts, buffers and caps per account, or choose Fastest payouts on the comparison to rank firms by how soon you can withdraw. The calculator applies all of these rules to your expected monthly profit.
